Fitzgibbons2010-02-21T15:53:34Z2010-02-21T15:53:34ZDemocrats from all Newton's 8 wards met yesterday to elect delegates to the 2010 Massachusetts State Democratic Convention.  It was a great day with a fantastic tournout of energized Democrats and talented individuals both holding and seeking statewide office.

Democratic elected officials and candidates for re-election Lt. Governor Tim Murray, Attorney General Martha Coakley, Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone, Governor's Council Member Marilyn Devaney, State Representatives Ruth Balser and Kay Khan were all on hand for the Caucus. 

In addition, we were visited by several talented Democrats who are running for statewide office.  Candidate for Governor Grace Ross, candidate for State Treasurer Steve Grossman, candidates for Auditor Suzanne Bump and Mike Lake and candidate for State Senate Charles Rudnick were busy meeting and greeting Newton Democrats.

Thanks to all who participated and helped make this event possible.  Special thanks to NDCC Co-Chairs Martina Jackson and Tim Snyder for putting together a successful day.

]]>Kennedy Tree Planted at Newton City Hallhttp://www.newtondems.org/dems/2009/12/28/kennedy-tree-planted-at-newton-city-hall.htmlTim Snyder2009-12-28T05:02:57Z2009-12-28T05:02:57ZThere is a new addition to the landscape northeast of City Hall in Newton.  A young linden tree was planted before the cold weather arrived in memory of the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy.  The NDCC donated funds to pay for the purchase, installation and care of this tree as part of Newton's Tree Sponsorship program.  This is the third tree that has been sponsored by local Democrats.  When the spring arrives, a commemorative plaque will be installed and there will be a formal dedication ceremony.

The Newton Democratic City Committee is sponsoring a forum on the merits of gambling - slots and casino - in the Commonwealth.  In the next session, the legislature will be considering the governor’s proposals for an expansion of gambling in Massachusetts as a way of generating revenue for the state and fostering economic growth.  Join us to hear the pros and cons and to ask your questions.

At a brunch on Sunday, October 25th the Newton Democratic City Committee will honor Senator Edward M. Kennedy for his forty-seven years of service in the U.S. Senate.  The Senator fought for those who had no voice.  He tirelessly served his constituents—the people of Newton, Massachusetts, and the whole country. 

“It’s enormously significant to me that the only description in the Bible about salvation is tied to one’s willingness to act on behalf of one’s fellow human beings.  My center of belief is the great Gospel of Matthew, in which he calls us to care for the least of those among us, and feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, visit the imprisoned.”

At the brunch, local Democrats will recall for us Senator Kennedy’s special connections to the city and people of Newton. Sharing their memories of the Senator and what he meant to all of us will be Congressman Barney Frank, Ward 4; Congressman Michael Capuano; Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray; Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley; Steve Grossman, Ward 7, former Chair of the Democratic State Committee and Democratic National Committee; Phil Johnston, former Chair of the Democratic State Committee; Senate Candidates Stephen Pagliuca and Alan Khazei; Deb Goldberg, State Committee member; Audrey Cooper, Ward 3; and Shawn Fitzgibbons, Ward 6.

We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever. We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine any of them without him.”
